Highlights

➀ Legislative change

The SVPA worked with victims to write The DEFIANCE Act, which is pending in Congress. The DEFIANCE Act, or the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images And Non-Consensual Edits Act of 2024, is a groundbreaking legislation designed to combat non-consensual deepfake pornography. It grants victims the right to pursue civil action against creators and distributors of digitally forged explicit content. The Act defines such content as any intimate depiction created or altered through technology to appear authentic, without the consent of the person depicted. With a statute of limitations of ten years, the Act provides a significant window for victims to seek justice. Garnering bipartisan support and endorsements from advocacy groups, the DEFIANCE Act is a critical step towards protecting individuals’ privacy and dignity in the digital age.

➁ Prevention education & action

The Sexual Violence Prevention Association (SVPA) has a multi-tiered approach to prevention education and action, which is designed to address sexual violence at different stages and from various angles. Here’s an expanded look at each level:

Primary Prevention:

  • Risk Factor Identification: This involves research and data analysis to understand the root causes and risk factors that may lead to someone becoming a perpetrator of sexual violence.

  • Education Programs: Implementing comprehensive education programs that promote healthy relationships, consent, and respect for boundaries from an early age.

  • Cultural Change: Working towards cultural change by challenging societal norms that perpetuate gender stereotypes and inequality, which are often underlying factors of sexual violence.

Secondary Prevention:

  • Threat Assessment: This includes the development of tools and protocols for identifying individuals who may pose an immediate threat of committing sexual violence.

  • Intervention Strategies: Creating intervention strategies such as bystander training programs that empower individuals to intervene safely and effectively when they witness behaviors that could lead to sexual violence.

  • Support Systems: Establishing support systems for individuals who have been identified as potential perpetrators to prevent the escalation of harmful behaviors.

Tertiary Prevention:

  • Continued Support: Providing ongoing support and resources for individuals who have already perpetrated sexual violence to prevent recidivism.

  • Policy Advocacy: Advocating for policies that ensure appropriate consequences and rehabilitation opportunities for perpetrators.

  • Community Partnerships: Building partnerships with law enforcement, mental health services, and community organizations to create a coordinated response to sexual violence.

By addressing prevention at these three levels, the SVPA aims to create a comprehensive strategy that not only stops sexual violence before it starts but also intervenes effectively when immediate threats are identified and works to prevent future incidents. This holistic approach is crucial for creating lasting change and ensuring the safety of communities.

➂ SVPA Score

They invented the SVPA Score - the first and only assessment for campus sexual violence. SVPA Scores are widely publicized which empowers prospective students to select the school that will best protect them. It also encourages universities to improve protections for sexual assault and rape. Soon, the SVPA Score will be expanded to assess companies, businesses, and other employers.

  • When looking to add a resource to our database, we carefully assess the following aspects to ensure it aligns with our commitment to providing comprehensive and reliable support:

    1. Relevance: How well does the resource address the specific needs and challenges survivors have experienced or may encounter?

    2. Accessibility: Is the resource readily available and accessible to a diverse audience?

    3. Credibility: What is the reputation and trustworthiness of the source? We prioritize resources from reputable organizations and experts.

    4. Inclusivity: Does the resource cater to a wide range of individuals, considering diverse backgrounds, ages, and experiences?

    5. Effectiveness: Has the resource demonstrated effectiveness in providing meaningful support or information?

    6. User-Friendly: Is the resource easy to navigate and understand, ensuring a positive experience?

    7. Timeliness: How current and up-to-date is the information or support provided by the resource?

    8. Ethical Considerations: Does the resource adhere to ethical standards and practices?

    9. Feedback and Reviews: We take into account feedback and reviews to gauge the firsthand experiences and effectiveness of the resource.

    10. Internal Evaluation: Have we taken the time as an internal team to personally try out, buy, or test the resources ourselves?

By evaluating these aspects, we aim to maintain a database that reflects our dedication to offering the best possible support for survivors.

  • Let's address some concerns that factored into our rating:

Transparency Matters: Reports on the SVPA are either challenging to locate or unavailable online.

Inclusivity and Representation: The SVPA was founded on the core belief that those most impacted by sexual violence must be leaders in addressing it. Thus, their entire team has lived-experience with sexual violence. Their board consists of people from the communities most impacted by this issue. This encompasses people of all races and ethnicities, including Native and Indigenous Peoples, who experience high rates of sexual violence but are often not represented in this field. Other communities that also experience heightened rates of sexual violence, including LGBTQ+ individuals, disabled people, asylum seekers, and undocumented immigrants, are represented on the board of directors and within the core team.

Resource Accessibility: The SVPA Score, initially cited in a 2021 pitch deck, was reported to be finalized after three years of research. Despite this, as of April 2024, the scoring system seems to be under development.

By evaluating these aspects, we aim to maintain a database that reflects our dedication to offering the best possible support for survivors.
